With nearly 30,000 entries, this is the first Hani-English, English-Hani dictionary to be published. This dictionary includes a helpful introduction that provides a basic description of the culture and language of the Hani people, most of whom live in Yunnan Province in southwest China. It also contains an extensive bibliography of English, Chinese, and Hani books and articles on Hani, as well as twelve appendices. The appendices include a comparison of the Hani and Akha orthographies; a story of the dragon and the son-in-law; Hani genealogies; Hani names of fifty-six ethnic groups in China; province names, municipalities and autonomous regions of Hani; and much more.
The Hani-English, English-Hani Dictionary is an important contribution to the study of the Tibeto-Burman languages in general, the Loloish (Yi) in particular, and to linguistic and anthropological studies of the region as a whole.
PAUL W. LEWIS is a compiler of the Lahu-English-Thai Dictionary and the Akha-English-Thai Dictionary. BAI BIBO (PIU BO) is a scholar of the Hani culture and dialect.
