The central issue in this book is the interaction between indigenous law and received law. The issue is addressed by means of a comparative description of six Asian countries with different religious and philosophical traditions.
The national reports cover Sunni-Islamic Egypt, Shiah-Islamic Iran, Hindu India, multi-religious Sri Lanka, Buddhist Thailand and Shintoistic Japan. The introduction suggests two working hypotheses for accurate observation and analysis of the total structure of law of a non-Western country. The various national reports are of high value and disclose complicated processes of assimilation and conflict between Asian indigenous law and received Western law.
